Working for the community

St Paul's is aiming to be a focal point for delivering services and facilities for the community of Wheatley Park. This is being achieved by making the Church building and facilities available to various community projects and agencies. These include a Distance Learning Project, DonMAG (Doncaster Mature Action Group), and the Doncaster Schools Workers Trust.

Doncaster Schools Worker Trust is a registered Image: DSW logoChristian charity which has been established for more than ten years. Its overall aim is to present the Christian faith in Doncaster Primary and Secondary schools in an exciting, interactive and non-biased way using a variety of formats. The Trust currently employs one primary and one secondary schools worker and is financed by local churches and personal donations.

Distance Learning Project is a joint project between the Pupil Referral Unit and the charity Streetreach, and is for providing one-to-one teaching to young people who have experienced problems at school.

DonMAG is a group of 50+ older persons dedicated to helping other people in their own age group with any problems that they may have. Whether it's issues dealing with health, Social Services, transport, housing or getting assistance with the things that older people tend to find difficult, DonMAG may be able to help. The group is represented on the Doncaster Strategic Partnership and is currently working on strategies to support people at home, reducing unnecessary admission to hospital and a national framework for older people. Membership is open to anyone over 50 years of age. For further information click here.

Doncaster Multi Faith Strategic Group is a group of people from different faith groups, all of whom share the same aim - to make sure that the needs of people of faith are taken on board by some of the key decision makers in Doncaster's regeneration. It is about promoting unity in diversity. Why is this important? Here are just a few of the reasons:

  • Faith groups undertake enormous activity that benefits local communities, and this contribution needs to be recognised, valued and supported.
  • Doncaster is undergoing massive regeneration at the moment and faith groups should have a voice and be part of the decision making process.
  • Legislation is in place to protect people from discrimination on the grounds of their faith: people need to be aware of this and it needs to be reinforced at a local strategic and grassroots level.
  • Faith groups are often those working with the people most marginalised in society. Gaps in service provision for vulnerable and marginalised people need to be identified, and activities and services joined up in response.

More information about the work of the Group and about joining may be addressed to Karen Wardman.
